400 rounds with a Speed E Cart
Date: October 21, 2009
I purchased my Speed E Cart in July 2007 and have just completed my 400th round with it so I guess this is a long term report.
I bought the cart because I always walk on hilly courses and couldn't carry anymore. I highly recommend a powered cart if your in the same situation.
This cart is designed to be a POWER ASSISTED cart. What this means is it is a push type Speed Cart that does MOST of the work for you. It needs some help on slippery grass hills due to loss of traction. A little lift on the handle is all that's required to load the front wheel, but it is not a complete hands off cart like the remote control Kangaroo type. Personally, I like the philosophy and it works well for me.
PRO:
Fairly inexpensive.
Simple to operate, I like the 15/30/60/yd buttons and use them all the time to send the cart around the green when I get close. I REALLY like the 200 yd cutoff as it has kept me from running down the fairway several times when Spitz( the carts name... they seem to have a personality of their own) left me behind after being distracted. (He behaves better if I buy him a beer now and then)
Reliable. Over the 400 rounds I had to replace two wheels due to broken spokes( no problems with the replacements), and after repairing the hinge on the glovebox several times I replaced the cover. Sun Mountain provided all parts for FREE well after the 1 year warranty. Spitz has been swimming once. I thought I hit the 15yd button and turned away but must have missed 'cause the next thing I heard was the splash as he went into the pond next to the green. I dashed over and found everything completely submerged with the wheel still happily spinning around. That was 2 years ago and there has never been any ill effects from the dip.
Good ergonomics. I find the push handle with the control placement perfect for me and is adjustable.
I would prefer a rotary knob for the speed control but I realize there is no way to make it water-proof and the buttons work just fine. The umbrella holder looks a bit weak to me but I have used it many times with no problems.
I have only pushed the cart for 18 holes one time after forgetting the battery at home. On a hard surface I think it's about the same as a Speed Cart, but in the rough I feel it's somewhat harder to push due to the wide front tire.
Fairly good glovebox with the cover serving as an excellent scorecard holder.
Good battery life (36+ holes when new, now 18+ holes)
CON:
The glovebox cover hinges are a weak point. They protrude down into the box and are frequently jammed by the contents. The plastic fittings on the cover are then easily broken off when raised or lowered. A little care will prevent the damage but it should be a better design.
After about 250 fold-ups of the cart ,the vinyl sheath covering the wires near the front wheel hinge point split and I felt the wires were in danger of breaking due to the repeated bending at that point. I did a little repair and rerouting to minimize the sharp bend. It remains a serious concern to the extent that I don't fold up the front wheel much any more but simply fold down the handle and throw it in the back of my pick-up.
I would like the control buttons to have a more definite 'feel' to them when pushed (see water story)
It is a bit tippy on side hills.
In the end, If this cart is every stolen I am going straight out to by another.

Very good but not perfect!
Date: December 11, 2008
I bought a Speed E-Cart in April, and have been using it out here in South Africa about once a fortnight. Most others use PowaCaddy type motorized carts, and I haven't yet seen anyone else with a E-Cart.
It certainly does what it says on the box. It pulls my bag along just fine on the flat, needs a bit of assist on an upslope, is controllable on the downslope even if steep, and frequently amazes my fourball with the 15/30/60 yard autopilot feature! Oh, and I just love that "glove compartment".
But it could be even better, and I recommend some changes: (i) The push button speed control is very unfriendly. I desperately wish it had a rotary control, which you can adjust much more quickly, accurately and intuitively; (ii) I absolutely hate the automatic cutoff after approx 200 yards. It surprises me everytime, forcing me to break my stride, which is more annoying than it sounds; (iii) The soft start is a bit too soft; (iv) One of the 3 tyres needs inflating almost every 2 weeks -- design fault or defect? (v) It's actually quite heavy, and bulky when folded. Can't you make it lighter and more compact?
Thanks for reading!! BTW, my experience with Golfsmith was truly excellent.

Love it!

I love my new SunMountain Speed E-Cart. I didn't realize how much strain pulling a cart up hill was until I didn't have to do it anymore. When I get done playing 18 holes I'm not half as tired.

I Love My New Cart

The Speed-E Cart does what it is advertised for. It maintains the speed on flat ground as well as uphill and downhill. It does require a little steering adjustment intially, but once that is done there is no problem keeping it goint straight.

Love to walk but not carry.
Date: December 20, 2005
Sun Mountain's Speed E-cart has been everything I had hoped it would be. The cart has variable speeds which are easy to control and plenty of power to go thirty-six holes. You do have to assist in pushing the cart up steep grades because it cannot get the traction it needs. Product is light and I can easily get it in and out of the trunk of my mid-size car. I highly recommend this product.
