I am an on site golfer and I play by feel and sight so it was very difficult for me to make this decesion. I prefer to look and go with my gut feeling but after playing with a golf partner that had one and we scored 62 on a par 72; I was convinved that this just might help my game a little bit. I still play mostly by feel and sight but use the unit when I really wants to know if I can get there in two without coming up short or over shooting the green. It has been a big help and I like the any course advantage without wondering if I can use it on this or that course. Any course and anywhere. Didn't mind the membership or download fee but some course don't have the setup. Now I care less about that. Also fits in my front pocket without swing restriction.

I am a pretty decent golfer (upper 70's) and was looking for a range finder to help me measure distances. Where I play (mostly public courses) the distance markings on the course can be off by 10 to 20 yards.
The Callaway 1200 is really easy to use. Literally one button operation. One press to turn it on, then hold it down to scan. This model can measure up to 1200 yards so you should have no problem measuring to tree lines, the front and backs of bunkers, etc. It is also really good to measure how far the group is in front of you so you don't hit into them!
If the flagsticks don't have reflectors on top, or it is windy, it may be hard to lock in on the flag stick. You can scan the green and get a reading that way.
The case that comes with it is ok. I wish it had a different way to protect the lense. Also the little strap that holds the carbabiner broke the first day. Other than that, I have been really happy with the 1200.
If you want more accuracy than a gps and more flexibility than a gps and no subscription costs - this is a great solution.
Pros: Quality, Durability, Easy to Use, Good Value, Features
Cons: the strap on the case is weak

Bought this unit when on sales ($299) in Nov'08 thru Golfsmith. Excellent RF, very accurate to a flag rather than front/center/back of a GPS. You don't have to mess around with software and download golf courses. It does not eat battery, one CR2 battery should last at least a year. I can tell how far to lay up or clear troubles. Wonderful toys, I really rely on it for club selection. No more guessing work

Callaway LR 1200 - Best ranger finder on market
Date: November 11, 2007
I've been using the SkyCaddie GPS for the past year and recently picked up the Callaway/Nikon Laser Rangefinder. I do not know why I've waited this long to buy one of these.
In my opinion, I would prefer the laser rangefinders over the GPS. It gives you the precise yardage to the pin instead of the general (front, middle, back) area on the GPS.
The LR 1200 is expensive, but well worth the money. It locks into the pin quickly unlike some of the cheaper models.
Comparing to the Bushnell Pinseeker 1500, the performance is similar, but the LR 1200 is smaller and more accessible.
I highly recommend this product if you don't mind spending the money.

Best Rangefinder on the Market

The Callaway/Nikon rangefinder is a much better rangefinder than the Bushnell! It is much newer with better technology and accuracy. I don't have problems getting readings with trees in the background anymore. The special Nikon technology in the system is far superior to anything else available. I get all the readings faster than the Bushnell and I love the more compact design. The Callaway has improved my game even more since I bought it. Couldn't be happier. Just wish I didn't wait so long.
